                 The Original Prussian German families
To Belknap Township [Presque Isle County], MI
NOTE: All information provided is to be used only as a resource for anyone researching
family line that originally lived in Belknap Township. The list of original families to Belknap Township was obtained from the records of St.
Michael’s Evangelical Lutheran Church of Belknap and from the early U.S. federal
census records. A good number of their offspring moved to other townships
in Presque Isle County and to other locations in Michigan and other states. Most of the original surnames contain names of their offspring and their succeeding
generations. Church and census records were used for names and dates.
In some instances, other persons provided family data to expand family lines.
Regardless, this is not meant to be an accurate nor complete recording of a family tree. The Pastors who served St. Michael’s from 1873 to the present recorded names, baptisms,
confirmations, marriages, and deaths. Many names will also include baptism,
confirmation, and marriage dates from other church records: namely, St. John’s
Evangelical Lutheran Church of Rogers City, Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church
of Moltke, St. John’s Lutheran Church of Hagensville, St. Peter’s Evangelical
Lutheran Church of Metz, St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church of Rural Posen,
St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church of Moltke, and from Rev. Christian Schwan’s
diaries that are located in the St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church of Moltke. Special credit goes to Norma nee Trapp Beebe for copying the St. Michael’s church records,
to Neil Altman for copying the St. John’s Hagensville and St. Peter’s Metz
records, and to Rich Boyd for copying the St. James Moltke records and the Rev. Schwan’s
diaries. Submitted by Donald Henry Knopf [30 Sep 2008] To read the family report: 1. Each person has a number. [There are 3039 names] The “+” in front of a number means that person married and/or had children and will appear in the next generation with the SAME number. 2. Full names are written as recorded in church records. 3. Census records are written as originally recorded. ADRIAN family to Belknap Township Included in the ADRIAN family file are the entire family files of the HOPP family to Belknap and the BRUNING family to Belknap. Charles HOPP married Johanna ADRIAN. John BRUNING married Wilhelmine ADRIAN. You will find all ADRIANS, HOPPS, & BRUNINGS in his report. Generation No. 1 1. Christopher Jochim1 Adrian was born October 05, 1815 in Rüggkang, Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Vorpommern, Prussia, and died January 15, 1900 in Rogers City, Michigan. He married Caroline Kätnow Teßmeyer 1838 in Mecklenburg, daughter of Gottfried Teßmann. She was born August 13, 1817 in Mecklenburg-Strelitz, Vorpommern, Prussia, and died July 25, 1892 in Alpena, Michigan. Christopher & Caroline are buried in Memorial Park Cemetery – Rogers City, MI. The CHRISTOPHER ADRIAN line came to America in 1860, settling at first in Niagara County, NY in the area of Wolcottsville. Niagara County was settled by Prussian Evangelical Lutherans, beginning in the late 1830’s. In 1830 King Frederick William III of Prussia ordered all Protestant congregations in Prussia to follow a common liturgy using Reformed practices rather than those based on Christian doctrines as outlined in the Book of Concord [documents which Christians from the fourth to the 16th century A.D. explained what they believed and taught on the basis of the Holy Scriptures]. Prussian Union officials sought out those who acted against the decree. Pastors who were caught were suspended from their ministry. If the suspended pastors were caught acting in a pastoral role, they were imprisoned. By 1835 many dissenting clergymen and laity were looking to emigration as a means to finding religious freedom. Those from the Brandenburg and Mecklenburg regions sought that freedom in Niagara County, NY. The Adrians were among those who sought a true form of Lutheran practices and beliefs. When they arrived in Niagara County, NY they were greeted by Bredow, Hopp, Grambau, Bruning, Brandt, Schlaeger, Klee, Brege families among many others who had come earlier. By 1860 much of the land in Niagara County was already occupied necessitating families to seek other locations for permanent settlement. Then, too, our country was debating the question of slavery. It was at this time that Christopher and his son, Henry joined the Union forces in what would be known as the Civil War. Upon returning from the Civil War, Christopher found other families in and around Wolcottsville moving to other states where land was available. Along with the Bredow, Grambau, Brege, Bruning families who had heard that the area around Mt. Clemens and Detroit, MI had available land, Christopher joined them in yet another move. Soon afterward, they read the ads in the Detroit papers [German & English versions] for workers in the forests and free land available in northern Michigan at Crawford’s Quarry. It wasn’t long after, about 1873, that Christopher and his immediate families came north to Crawford’s Quarry. Christopher's Civil War Record: Enlisted as a Private on 4 September 1862 at the age of 43. Enlisted in Company H, 151st Infantry Regiment New York on 22 Oct 1862. Received a disability discharge from Company H, 151st Infantry Regiment New York on 18 Nov 1864. Obituary: Presque Isle County Advance [Thurs, 18 Jan 1900] Christopher J Adrian, an old pioneer rendered aged 84 years and a veteran of the Civil War, died at the home of his son, Ernst, at Rogers City, last Monday morning from paralysis, with which he was stricken a week ago. The deceased had been a resident of Presque Isle county for upwards of 20 years and was the father of a large family, six of whom, Charles, Ernst, August, Marie, Mrs Charles (Johanna) Hopp Sr, and Mrs John (Wilhelmine) Bruening, are old residents of this county. His wife, Caroline, aged 74 years, died about 5 years ago. The funeral ceremonies were performed by Rev J D Druckenmiller at the Lutheran St John's church yesterday afternoon and the remains being interred in the Rogers City cemetery. Inscription on tombstone, Rogers City Memorial Park Cemetery: (Civil War Veteran): Company E, 151st NY Infantry. Concerning the maiden name of Caroline, it appears from various sources that the name has been spelled "Lession", "Tession", "Session", probably due to various attempts to translate German script into English. Other sources also have listed her maiden name as "Kaetnow", or "Kortman". In the death certificate of her daughter Anna Mary Hopp, Anna's mother's maiden name is listed at "Kaetnow". From Robert Adrian is the following: Based on oral history from my grandparents Fred and Emma Adrian who, although neither could recall the full name, thought with some surety that the name began with "TESS", but didn't recall the full name. Since Fred was of a very young age when his grandmother passed away in 1892, I am still waiting to find a more authoritative source as to the real last name. "Kaetnow" is the only name that I have found to date with an authoritative source as it was listed on Anna's death certificate in 1911 by her son Henry Hopp who very well may have known his grandmother Caroline. Since there are so many variations of the surname and since at this time none of us who have been researching this ADRIAN family genealogy has as yet discovered Caroline's parentage, it may be acceptable to use any of the above surnames. Obituary: The Democrat [Presque Isle County – Thurs. 28 July 1892 Last Monday evening at 8 o'clock Mrs Christopher Adrian peaceably passed over to yon shore from whence no traveler returns. Beecher farm and has been known in this city of over six years. Mr Adrian has been suffering from heart trouble, which alone is the cause of his sudden demise. He arose yesterday morning in apparently good health, ate heartily at breakfast and dinner, and about 2 o'clock he went to his work feeling in the best of spirits. At the time of his death he complained of feeling bad and stopped his work. John, his son, came to him and was helping him to the wagon, when he died in his arms without a struggle. Dr. C. C. Deceased was about 50 years of age and leaves a wife and eight children, one girl and seven boys. The daughter, Miss Carrie Adrian, resides in this city. The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at 1 o'clock from the Harmonia church of which he was a devoted member. Rev. H. H. At the time of his death, Mr Adrian was 72 years of age having spent 68* years in Presque Isle county. He was the father of 8 children, all surviving him. The deceased was ill seven months prior to death. Ernest Adrian belonged to that sturdy stock of German farmers through whose sufferings and hardships made possible the development of Presque Isle County and also the city. Having come to this county at the age of 4 years*, Mr Adrian has watched the county emerge from a wilderness to the present state of prosperous farms and booming cities. His death strikes a chord in the heart of every resident who realizes the successfulness with which the old pioneers met the great task which they encountered. The children were all present at the time of death. They are Mrs Chris Bredow, Mrs August Seelbinder, Mrs Henry Koehler of Anchorville, Mrs William Peetz and William, Edward, Irving and August Adrian of Moltke. He is also survived by two sisters, Mrs H Luderman and Mrs John Bruning. Mrs Fred Pruce of Fraser was also here at the time of the death. She is a niece. Interment will be made at the Rogers cemetery from the Lutheran church of which the deceased was a member. Rev Ross will officiate. [*Additional notes: There seems to be a discrepancy as to the age at which Ernest came to Presque Isle County. It was probably at the age of 4 that the family emigrated from Germany to the United States, specifically New York State. Ernest would have been about 11 years old when his father, Christopher, entered military service in the Civil War. It probably wasn't for another 10 years or so before his father brought the family from New York to Presque Isle county when Ernest was in his early 20's.] Notes for Auguste Caroline Schroeder: Another family tree shows Auguste died in January. Sophia2 Adrian (Christopher Jochim1) was born February 06, 1854 in Mecklenburg-Strelitz, Vorpommern, Prussia, and died March 07, 1882 in Crawford's Quarry - Belknap township (Hagensville), Michigan. She married Johann Friedrich Wilhelm 'William' Hagen, Sr. August 16, 1873 in Rogers City, Michigan, son of Wilhelm Hagen and Dorothe Henning. He was born May 15, 1830 in Wittenberg, Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Vorpommern, Germany, and died November 23, 1891 in Belknap Township (Hagensville), Michigan. Sophia & William are buried in Memorial Park Cemetery – Rogers City, MI. The PI marriage records show William Hagen & Sophia Adrian were married by William Meredith, Justice of the Peace. Notes for Sophia Adrian: Obituary: [Presque Isle County Advance - unknown date] Mrs (Sophia Adrian) Hagen, wife of Mr William Hagen of Crawford's Quarry, died on Tuesday last, and will be buried today. Mrs Hagen had been a great sufferer for many years from a complication of diseases and her death, although bitterly felt by her husband and numerous warm personal friends, did not come upon them unprepared, but has been expected daily for some time past. [Burial: March 09, 1882, Memorial Park Cemetery - Rogers City, Michigan] NOTE: The Presque Isle County, MI Court House death record shows Sophia died of consumption [T.B.]. Notes for Johann Friedrich Wilhelm 'William' Hagen, Sr.: Went by William. William was born about 1830 or 1831 in Wittenburg, Mecklenburg, Prussia, to John and Dorothe, nee Henning, Hagen. He came to Presque Isle County about 1870 and built a store at Crawford's Quarry and ran a business there for a number of years. The Advance of December 11, 1884 reads: "William Hagen--Dealer in general merchandise, dry goods, boots and shoes, cigars, eggs, and butter. Also dealer in posts and telegraph poles at the location in Crawford's Quarry." Crawford's Quarry was located on Lake Huron in Rogers Township about two miles below Rogers City and had a population of 150 shortly after it was founded. In 1877 it had a sawmill, a Lutheran Church, a district school, hotel and fishing wharves. It was settled mostly by Germans and Poles. Crawford was given a post office under that name in 1864. The first postmaster was L.C. Crawford who also ran the sawmill and the general store. William Dueltgen operated the hotel and William Hagen in 1870 opened the second general store. It was in this little village that William and Sophia made their home and the place where their children were born and died before the age of 2 years and 29 days. And then Sophia, too, died at the age of only 28 years, 1 month, and 1 day of consumption [T.B.]. It seems that shortly after Sophia's death that William relocated to the west in Belknap Township at what would become known as Hagensville Corner and operated a sawmill, a general store, and the post office. His dwelling house and store occupied the entire southeast corner of the new settlement. William was in partnership with Wilson Pines in operating the sawmill. On 18 July 1882, William married for a third time to Bertha Kranzow. This marriage produced two surviving sons, William, born July 1885, and Edward born, November 1887. By 1886 Hagensville had become large enough to have its own post office and stage coach service. Mr. Hagen became its first postmaster on March 12, 1886. The post office remained operational until March 31, 1912. An 1887 description of the settlement lists a population of about 60, semi-weekly stage and mail service, and a bustling Saw and Planing Mills of Hagen and Pine. The stage fares noted were $2.00 to Alpena and 25 cents to Rogers City, a distance of about 5 miles away. William died November 23, 1891 in Hagensville, Michigan, murdered by John Idalski over a 15-cent file. Idalski objected to the price and used foul language in the post office. He was ordered out of the store. Idalski struck Hagen in the head with a rack stake as he partially turned to go back inside the store. Hagen died that evening about 7pm. John Idalski was sent to Jackson Prison for 15 years. By the 1890's the virgin timber was gone and Crawford's Quarry became a ghost town. It was in this area of Crawford's Quarry that August and Mary Adrian had made their home and the place where their son Fred brought his new wife in 1908 and their children were born. It was also in 1908 that Crawford's Quarry would get a temporary new lease on life when it was discovered that the entire area surrounding was laying atop a huge deposit of remarkable pure calcite, a primary source of limestone used in the production of top grade steel. The entire Crawford's Quarry and surround farmlands were purchased by the new stone quarry company which would eventually become a part of US Steel and the entire area would become the world's largest limestone quarry. What was once the village of Crawford's Quarry is a part of that vast open pit quarry. McSmen shows: Living on Third Street in the home of Oliver and Elizabeth Fitzpatrick ARLDT, Mary, 15, Servant, born Germany, parents born Germany, Domestic COPIED BY TOM & MARY ATKINSON FROM AN ARTICLE IN ALPENA NEWS, DATED JULY, 1910: "Mrs Mary S. Adrian and seven children, ranging in ages from five years old upwards, and her daughter, Mrs William Teskey and baby, all of Long Rapids Township-- ten persons, all of the same family, in the party-- started Saturday on a long journey to their future home in the province of Saskatchewan in the Canadian Northwest. "Henry Adrian and William Teskey, son and son-in-law of Mrs Adrian, have been out in that country since May 14th last, preparing farm homes for mother, wife, and the little ones. They have taken up government homesteads in that country, said to be the richest and most promising agricultural district in the world, and have sent for their families. At the present time, we presume, that is a wild and unsettled country, and being transplanted from Long Rapids, it will be a lonesome place for them or a time. "But, we are told, that country is settling up rapidly mostly by Americans, where the government land is free to the homesteader with prospects of bounteous harvests, and that a network of railroad systems are already building throughout that country which will soon afford the pioneer inhabitants of Saskatchewan a convenient outlet to civilization and the markets of the world, inspires the adventurous immigrant with high hopes for the future. "Mrs Mary Adrian is the widow of Gus Adrian who died in Long Rapids about four years ago, leaving her with a house full of children to mourn the loss. But, fortunately for Mrs Adrian she has good boys, full of life and strength and hopeful ambition, who promise to stand by their mother and the little ones to the end, or until their efforts in braving the hardships and privations of frontier life shall be crowned with success and happiness. "Their post office address, in that 'Land of the Midnight Sun', is Mortlach, Saskatchewan."
