                    The Original Prussian German families
To Belknap Township [Presque Isle County], MI
NOTE: All information provided is to be used only as a resource for anyone researching
family line that originally lived in Belknap Township. The list of original families to Belknap Township was obtained from the records of St.
Michael’s Evangelical Lutheran Church of Belknap and from the early U.S. federal
census records. A good number of their offspring moved to other townships
in Presque Isle County and to other locations in Michigan and other states. Most of the original surnames contain names of their offspring and their succeeding
generations. Church and census records were used for names and dates.
In some instances, other persons provided family data to expand family lines.
Regardless, this is not meant to be an accurate nor complete recording of a family tree. The Pastors who served St. Michael’s from 1873 to the present recorded names, baptisms,
confirmations, marriages, and deaths. Many names will also include baptism,
confirmation, and marriage dates from other church records: namely, St. John’s
Evangelical Lutheran Church of Rogers City, Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church
of Moltke, St. John’s Lutheran Church of Hagensville, St. Peter’s Evangelical
Lutheran Church of Metz, St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church of Rural Posen,
St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church of Moltke, and from Rev. Christian Schwan’s
diaries that are located in the St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church of Moltke. Special credit goes to Norma nee Trapp Beebe for copying the St. Michael’s church records,
to Neil Altman for copying the St. John’s Hagensville and St. Peter’s Metz
records, and to Rich Boyd for copying the St. James Moltke records and the Rev. Schwan’s
diaries. Submitted by Donald Henry Knopf [22 September 2008] ALTMAN family line to Belknap Township [Presque Isle County], MI To read the family report: 1. Each person has a number. Carl Voelz in the St. Michael's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Belknap. Robert's godparents were Alfred Zinke, Paul Hardies, and Elna Sellke. 'Bob' has orally recorded much family history which has been written in the Zinke, Hoeft, and Hardies family trees. The following is the bibliography of Bob Zinke: I, Robert 'Bob' Zinke, was born 25 March 1928 on the old William Hardies Sr. homestead in Belknap Township [Presque Isle County], Michigan. My parents were Herman Zinke and Bertha Hardies. In 1929 they moved to Rogers City renting some rooms in the upstairs home of Carl Stephan, directly across from the Westminster Prebyterian Stone Church on Third Street. This home today is the Zgorski - Micketti Plumbing and Heating. From there we moved to North Friedrich Street where I attained adulthood. In the summers I would go out to the Belknap farms alternating with the uncles: Elmer Hardies, John Brege, Herman Steinke. I learned all about farming and it always stayed in my blood. Where hauling in hay, shocking grain, and hauling it also into the barns to get ready for threshing was work, but there were always songs to sing to jolly us on. Most of these were good old church hymns. The singing especially got good when I was at John Brege's. John's son, Melvin was my younger cousin who also loved to sing. The two of us did a pretty good job. I also milked cows by hand and drove a team of horses. One time at my Uncle Elmer Hardies' I was given the job to drive the team of horses hitched to an empty manure spreader from the 'back 40' of the homestead. Down the road I went and the horses began a gallop. As I went by the Schalk farm, Lucille Brege Schalk hollered, 'the horses are running away with Bob'. I now was at the Charley Elowsky hardwoods, soon to be readying to go down the hill before coming to the right angle of Kowalski Corner. Now as I looked to my left I saw my uncle Elmer Hardies pulling along side of me with the truck. He swerved in the front of the horses and slowed them down, pulled over and jumped out of the truck, got over enough so when the horses came up to him he began to run and grabbed a hold of the side of the spreader in between the front and back wheels and with all that he had sailed himself into the spreader quickly, grabbed the reins from me and did a craftsman's job of stopping the horses. Don Knopf you can surely appreciate this feat. If he hadn't made it on to the manure spreader, I am sure the back wheel would have run him over. At the corner I am sure I would have been thrown off as the horses would have cut the corner sharply with me, the manure spreader and all would have been flying. I am still here, though. My cousin Carl Zink for a while was the hired hand at my uncle Elmer Hardies. It wasn't uncommon for farmers to have a hired-hand. The pay was usually $1.00 a day, room and board. Remember a dollar had a lot of buying power in those days. I could write may more farm stories, but will rest it. I thoroughly enjoyed all the stays on the farms. I used to love to pile wood. How about hoeing long rows of corn and potatoes? All good stuff. The one real un-liked job on the farm was picking stones. There never was an end to stone picking. Plowing over the ground and the frost heaving new stones meant stone picking was an annual task. Through an accident at 2 years of age I encountered a scar that birth-marked me for life. In the shed of the new house on Friedrich Street my mother was washing clothes with her new, automatic, ringer washing machine. She left to go into the house for a moment and the long sleeved sweater I had on got caught in the ringers of Mama's Car. By the time she returned from my screaming, the sweater went clear to my elbow. She popped open the ringer and to Dr Nester's she ran with me to his office next to the Westminster Stone Church. As I grew up and the arm became longer the scar only seemed to recede because of arm growth. Most people don't see it, as it is on the inside of the arm. The next most important thing was I talked my mother into letting me attend the St. John Lutheran School. Here I learned to love my Savior and why He died for me. I became intense at memorizing Luther's Small Catechism and hymns from the hymnal. I did memorize all 703 verses in the Catechism; all of the commandments and their intense meanings; the creeds and their meanings; all the other parts of it. I was attentive to Bible learning. It captured my heart. My teacher for grades 5-8 was Martin Luther Weiss. I honor him with being the greatest teacher I ever had. To show you some of his cunning I will relate an event. The rule was in our school there was no reading of comic books. The only exception were classic comics, which was considered learning history. We would sometimes take out our big note book and open it and slip a comic book into it and read it. I was in the back corner of the room feeling very safe. Suddenly Mr. Weiss called me to the front of the room and hauled out his big switch blade knife and handed it to me. So out of the room I went to the close-by, big, weeping willow tree. Climbing up I picked out the best possible switch I could cut. I felt if I was going to get a licking it may as well be a good one. In I came and laid the thick switch I had cut and the knife onto the desk. I looked down a little and he said, 'go back to your seat'. Now another love came into my life. In the fifth grade, at ten years old, I got some extra money and I talked my mother into letting me go to the bowling alley which was easily in view of our kitchen window. I rolled a big 52 for my first game and then some days later I came back with a 101. A short time later, I went to the alley and talked a pinsetter into letting me try setting pins. Upon this deal he paid me 2 cents of the 4 cents a line at that time. Now I had spending money to begin to learn this game. Within a year later, at 11 years of age, I bowled my first 200 game - a 211. I now experienced a love affair with bowling until the late 1980's until I retired and then spent winters in Florida, and eventually moved there permanently. I then switched to golf. I wrote a story on my ten years of setting pins, and helping run the counter and making the Rogers City bowling alley my second home. In the early 1900's I wrote a story on this piece of Roger City history and it was published in the Advance with a 16 week run. You can read the story from the PI GENWEB site. In 1949, in the latter part of April a buddy, Russ Wagner, and I decided to go to Detroit for a job. We went to my brother Bill and Delmar Hopp who had moved there earlier, Russ and I rented one of their rooms and shared the cost. We got jobs at the Dodge main plant. Our group always made room for others from the Rogers City area who would come to Detroit for jobs. We had many turnovers and really we all got along fine. Card playing was one of our great past-times. In August 1950, another buddy, Carl Bruning, and I joined the Navy as a result of the Korean conflict. We were sworn in 11 September 1950. Carl and I were put into the Seabees, and together, we served one year. I was discharged on June 30, 1954. I did tours of duty on Amchitka [one of the Aleutian Islands], Quadjelien Island in the Marshall Islands, and Midway Island. Intermittent times I spent in Port Hueneme, California, near Oxnard. At the time, horseshoe pitching was a popular past-time. However, card playing was done most often. While on Midway Island, going to Church became the most important thing for me. I did a lot of Bible studying with many different Protestant groups, and did a little visiting with my Catholic friends at their Quanset Hut Chapel. Now I began to build on the base I received from St. John Lutheran School. This all turned out to be great for me. In 1954, after discharge, I met a lady by the name of Aloah Hoeft Donald. With a bit of a whirlwind courtship we were married on 2 October 1954 at St Micheal's Lutheran Church in Belknap. Rev. Harold Molzan doing the ceremony. Carl Bruning was my best man and Delores Krey Bruning was the maid of honor. Aloah had two children with her first husband David Donald who was from Long Rapids [Alpena County], Mi. I soon was called back to my Detroit job at the Chrysler Dodge main plant. Then in early 1955 I adopted Connie Faye Donald and Cindy Kay Donald. Soon afterward on 20 April 1955, our first child, Christie May was born. It wasn't long and Christie was always being taken to the hospital. Upon thorough examination it was determined she had Von Gierke's Glycogen Storage Disease. Son Jack Herman was born on 14 April 1958 and was a healthy boy. Son Robert Mark was born 27 May 1961, and also turned up with the Von Gierke Disease. Von Gierkes Glycogen Storage Disease is incurable and is inherited. This is a disease where an emzyme that breaks up the sugar fats in the liver and sends it out. They were born without that enzyme. They both would have died at an early age, if it wasn't for modern medicine. Christie weathered it with hardships, and is now married and has one child who does not have the disease. Actually her life is quite ordinary now. For Robert Mark, however, it was a different ballgame. He had kidney failure, and went on dialysis. Then in 1982, I donated him a kidney which lasted for 17 years. Then he was given a cadaver kidney in 1998. However, immediately after the transplant, he developed serious liver problems and ended in a hospital stay of 42 days with 3 more operations. 20 percent of his liver was removed. He came through these operations well, but his physical capabilities were limited." In past research, we discovered that in order for this to happen, both parents have to be carriers of this gene malfunction. So that means that Aloah hoeft and Robert Zinke both have this heredity carriage. Could this be from the Hoeft heredity. My children have a hard time feeling they will pass on this possibility. As we keep going in the family trees you see just how possible it is to be a carrier. People have trouble distinguishing the difference between being a carrier and having the disease itself. Also it indicates that if one of your parents are a carrier that all children inherit this mishap." There is a lot of ado about if all children becoming carriers if they keep marrying good stock. They say the percentages drop, but I could not get any doctor to say it would vanish completely when my son Rob was in the hospital for the 42 days. For information concerning Von Gierke Glycogen Storage Disease on the Internet check the following site: http://www.pitt.edu/~edugene/Von Gierke.html I learned all about farming during my early years from working alternately on the Belknap farms of my Uncles: Elmer Hardies, John Brege, and Herman Steinke. Farming always stayed in my blood. I always gardened, including the 8 years I lived on a 2 acre plot in Troy, Mi. I even had a small tractor with a hydraulic cultivator. I finally got to feel like a farmer. I had wonderful asparagus that was there when we bought the property. I was blessed with great raspberries which we shared with the neighbors along with all the other vegetables. Canning pickles was a special treat along with making good, old German Slubbergerken (Slippery Jacks - made from matured cucumbers). Many people didn't make them. We made our own sauerkraut, crock dill pickles, and crock peppers. Mary and I tried a lot of things. I married Hilda Marian Ewers Hinton Buchanan on 9 August l978. For me, this was indeed a remarkable blessing. Mary, as she is known by, is all I could desire in a woman and wife. The unsteady foundation of my first marriage was completely changed to one of joy, and honest reasoning in my second marriage. She truly is 'Mary my Rib'. Mary and I met in a Detroit Lutheran Singles group that I joined 2 years after my divorce from Aloah. We had a lot of fun with this group and eventually, by dating, I knew Mary was the gal for me. The night I proposed to her was a 1974-75 New Year's Eve party when at midnight I danced her under the mistletoe and asked her to marry me. She noted that maybe I was a little to old for me, but as time went on I saw it wasting. We tied the knot. Again, a final note - "it was a blissful adventure. It might be interesting to note that Mary & I and her daughter Marcia double dated with Randall Humphrey. Randall & I bowled on the same mixed league bowling team for sometime. We went out dancing together and many other events. They married in May of 1974 and Mary and I in August of 1975. Mary and I bought a small motor home and did much traveling especially to Florida and back. We had a cabin 12 miles south of West Branch, MI where we spent many weekends. Just a mile from us was the Old Log Cabin Mennonite Church, which we attended while there. We got well acquainted with the parishioners. The minister always enjoyed my input in Bible Class. This cabin was a favorite get-away for some years. We had one experience that was uncommon. We would take the motor home and traverse the wilderness north of the main Gladwin Road and back to Alger, Michigan. There were many roads that were sort of the equivalent of old fire lanes. In the summer people would come and camp out with tents and trailer houses, wherever. Upon driving through one evening we were stopped by a lady who told us a young boy was crying on the roadside by his small gas-powered scooter. We responded that we would stop. Upon much persuasion we talked him into coming with us. We put his small gas-scooter into our motor home. We went back to the closest bar to our place and explained the situation. We called the State Police and then waited. All the people were just so kind to him, and he had a ball. The police finally arrived, and after speaking with us for quite some time, they left with the boy and found his parents were camping in one of the areas. He was reunited. We received a nice box of fruit from them as a thank you. It worked out right. Mary and I also went three times to Hawaii, shoring up with her two sisters and their husbands. We had great times and saw a lot of interesting events on the Islands. We now have lived in Florida since 1992 and understand more than ever that our married life is now nearing twilight and dusk is beginning to try its resurrection. It's nice to have the feeling that at 15 years I thanked God in church for 50 Golden Jubilee years in 15. Now at 75 years of Joy in 25. Final end is 1000 years of Joy, the perfect number, and then Eternal Bliss forever. This Sunday, again, as usual, we will hold hands in church during the sermon. As one: Mary and I take in the precious gift of God and offer our reciprocal praise. If any of you have a problem in marriage, may God lead and direct you to find joy and lasting peace through Christ, Who is the Leader. For those who may not take kindly from what I said here, may your oneness be of your joy together. Immediately after permanently moving to Florida in 1992 in we planted fruit trees: three grapefruit and two orange. One of the orange trees didn't turn out well. We pick the fruit, both the grapefruit and orange, squeeze out the juice, and found that mixing half grapefruit juice and half orange juice, the combination is delicious. We freeze the juice into two liter pop bottles. Oh, how delicious the 8 ounce glass of juice tasted in the morning. Citrus juice is the item always for us to start the day. In 2004, Florida had 4 Hurricanes. We endured two of them: Frances and Jeanne. I equate them as Florida blizzards. The wind can be a lot stronger, but the howl of it is present. These two took nearly identical paths. Frances had about 90 to 110 mile an hour winds over us. We were in our home. In the morning we saw two Queen Palms blown over, three were bent, two left bald and a grapefruit tree blown over. These trees were all removed. There was some damage to our back porch roof. Throughout the neighborhood, many huge trees were down with some fallen on houses. Many houses had their shingles ripped off. When Jeanne came, it got a few more trees and raised havoc with the tarp coverings of the roofs and added more damage. The areas north of us received more of the blunt force winds where Jeanne created near ground zero destruction. Since then we have risen above their ugly heads and things are beginning to normalize. Much work continues on repairing the destruction that was created by these two hurricanes. Marriage Notes for Myrtle Altman and Robert Zinke: Myrtle & Robert were married by the Rev. James Erickson. NOTE dated 29 June 2006 from Bonnie [Couture] Altman & Rodney Altman, parents of James regarding siblings of James: "Charles Edward was our only natural son. We were married a long time before God gave him to us. Charles is a natural, James Edward, Jennifer Sue, & Mark Anthony are adopted. James and Mark were originally 1/2 brothers but became full brothers at adoption. The state of Michigan thought we did such a good job with Jim they presented us with Mark. The boys had the same mom but different dads. Betty Beck, was James & Mark's natural mother. She is limited in her mental abilities and had no idea she gave the children up for adoption. We always treated Betty with respect and let her live in her world, that is why she is listed as James' mother which she was, but he was our son in every way. Sabrina is James full natural sister having the same mother and same father. The father died in prison. Mike Beck is his natural full brother same as Sabrina. That makes them 1/2 brothers and 1/2 sister to Mark. We adopted Jim at age 12 & Mark at 11. We let them contact and be part of Betty's limited life. She was in adult foster care for many years. Jennifer is an indian child we adopted her at 12. Jennifer has no known birth parents. She is all ours. Mark and James were born to Betty Beck, but they are all ours.
