                 The Original Prussian German families
To Belknap Township [Presque Isle County], MI
NOTE: All information provided is to be used only as a resource for anyone researching
family line that originally lived in Belknap Township. The list of original families to Belknap Township was obtained from the records of St.
Michael’s Evangelical Lutheran Church of Belknap and from the early U.S. federal
census records. A good number of their offspring moved to other townships
in Presque Isle County and to other locations in Michigan and other states. Most of the original surnames contain names of their offspring and their succeeding
generations. Church and census records were used for names and dates.
In some instances, other persons provided family data to expand family lines.
Regardless, this is not meant to be an accurate nor complete recording of a family tree. The Pastors who served St. Michael’s from 1873 to the present recorded names, baptisms,
confirmations, marriages, and deaths. Many names will also include baptism,
confirmation, and marriage dates from other church records: namely, St. John’s
Evangelical Lutheran Church of Rogers City, Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church
of Moltke, St. John’s Lutheran Church of Hagensville, St. Peter’s Evangelical
Lutheran Church of Metz, St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church of Rural Posen,
St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church of Moltke, and from Rev. Christian Schwan’s
diaries that are located in the St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church of Moltke. Special credit goes to Norma nee Trapp Beebe for copying the St. Michael’s church records,
to Neil Altman for copying the St. John’s Hagensville and St. Peter’s Metz
records, and to Rich Boyd for copying the St. James Moltke records and the Rev. Schwan’s
diaries. Submitted by Donald Henry Knopf [22 September 2008] ARLT family line to Belknap Township [Presque Isle County], MI To read the family report: 1. Each person has a number. [There are 483 names] The “+” in front of a number means that person married and/or had children and will appear in the next generation with the SAME number. 2. Full names are written as recorded in church records. 3. Census records are written as originally recorded. Generation No. 1 1. Johann 'Georg' Adalbert1 Arlt II (GeorgA) was born April 15, 1843 in Krotoschin Stadt, Kreis Posen, West Prussia, and died May 17, 1880 in Rogers City, Michigan. He married (1) Henriette Von Koch Abt. 1860 in Probably Mirchau Parish, Kreis Karthaus, West Prussia, daughter of Carl Koch. She was born Abt. 1843 in Kreis Lauenburg, Hinterpommern, Prussia, and died 1873 in Rogers City, Michigan. He married (2) Henriette Boyke Abt. 1875, daughter of Carl Boyke and Carolina Sendau. She was born April 18, 1852 in Prussia, and died March 12, 1922 in Belknap Township, Michigan. Parents of Johann 'Georg' Adalbert Arlt II were Georg & Anna Rosina nee SPILLER ARLT. They married 3 July 1842 in Krotoschin, Kreis Posen, West Prussia. No record indicates they came to America. Notes for Johann 'Georg' Adalbert Arlt II & Henrietta Koch: From the records of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church of Detroit, Michigan Johann Georg Arlt is a witness of the marriage of Albert Grulke and Sophia Koch, his wife Henriette's sister, on 14 July 1867. All other records show George as his first name. Georg, his wife Henrietta, sons Charles & Ernst and daughter Marie came to America in 1866 and settled in Detroit, Michigan. In 1873 the family came to Presque Isle County, and settled in Belknap Township and soon afterward Henrietta died. It is not known where she is buried, but most likely in the St. Michael’s Cemetery in an unmarked grave since their homestead was almost directly across from the church. Soon after her death, Georg married another Henrietta in 1874/1875. This Henrietta was a Boyke. It is suspected Hermann Hoeft provided funds for the homestead land which was almost directly across from the St. Michael’s Church. Herman Hoeft and 'George' Arlt were friends in Kreis Karthaus and also in Detroit. In 1870 they are enumerated with the last name of ARNDT. 1870 Census: Hamtramck Township, Wayne County, Michigan Federal Census [Roll M593_709; Page 171] enumerated 28 June 1870 shows: ARNDT, George, head, 30, common laborer, born Prussia ARNDT, Yetta, wife, 30, keeping house, born Prussia ARNDT, Charles, son, 9, born Prussia ARNDT, Ernst, son, 8, born Prussia ARNDT, Marie, daughter, 5, born Prussia ARNDT, Hulda, daughter, 2, born Michigan The first election after the organization of the township of Belknap was held at the home of George Arlt on 19 April 1875. The first officers of the new township were: Supervisor - John McArthur; Clerk - Charles Schalk; Treasurer - William Brandt; School Inspector - William Schlaeger; School Superintendent - Albert Rehbein; Township Assessor - John Bredow; Highway Commissioner - John D. McKenzie; four Justices of the Peace - John Bredow, Julius Bredlow, August Barabas, and Gottlieb Hasenburg; four contables - Ernest Adrian, Albert Gruhlke, Rudolph von Wiedersheim, and Fredrick Dethloff. Only men voted in the early elections, and 78 men voted in the first Belknap Township election. The meetings of the Township Board members were always held at the home of the township's clerk until 1907. In 1907, the first mention of a meeting held at 'the Belknap Township Hall' was noted. [Note: The church records show Martha Poirier Moulds.] Obituary: Alpena News [21 July 2008] Mary K. Moulds passed away peacefully July 18, 2008 under Hospice Care the last few days of her life. The cause of death was complications from Alzheimer's disease she had suffered from over 18-20 years. She had been in care for 6 1/2 years, the last 32 months at Rolling Acres in Ossineke where she had received excellent care. Mary was born September 1, 1934 to Charles and Kay Poirier in Alpena. She married Guy Moulds on August 2, 1953 and this union gave them two sons, Peter (Deborah) of Grand Rapids and Charles (Teresa) of Essexville, three grandchildren, Loren, Jennifer and Eric. Mary went to work outside the home early and decided to go to college at age 27. She graduated from ACC with only one B, in music and went on to get her masters degree in Social Work at age 37 complying a 3.85 GPA though out. She went to work for the State in 1964 and retired early on December 31, 1991 partly due to the state of Alzheimer's disease. Mary and her husband did a great deal of volunteer work for about ten years in the U.S. and overseas until her sickness became worse in 1995. Mary had many loves and interests in life. Beyond family and faith was her love of the cloth. She was a quilter, sewer, weaver and spinner and to this end had a sign in her room, "The one that dies with the most fabric wins". In this area Mary will be near the top. Mary's remains have been taken for cremation after which her ashes will be buried on family property she loved south of Alpena, near the river, pond and large oak tree. A small gathering will be held at a later date after a number of trees have been planted in her memory. Contributions in her memory can be made to "Ebenezer Glenn Orphanage" located in Haiti, and sent to Ebenezer Glenn Orphanage, 3572 Quebec Trail, Wayland, Michigan 49348.
