The Original Prussian German families
To Belknap Township [Presque Isle County], MI
NOTE: All information provided is to be used only as a resource for anyone researching
family line that originally lived in Belknap Township.
The list of original families to Belknap Township was obtained from the records of St.
Michael’s Evangelical Lutheran Church of Belknap and from the early U.S. federal
census records. A good number of their offspring moved to other townships
in Presque Isle County and to other locations in Michigan and other states.
Most of the original surnames contain names of their offspring and their succeeding
generations. Church and census records were used for names and dates.
In some instances, other persons provided family data to expand family lines.
Regardless, this is not meant to be an accurate nor complete recording of a family tree.
The Pastors who served St. Michael’s from 1873 to the present recorded names, baptisms,
confirmations, marriages, and deaths. Many names will also include baptism,
confirmation, and marriage dates from other church records: namely, St. John’s
Evangelical Lutheran Church of Rogers City, Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church
of Moltke, St. John’s Lutheran Church of Hagensville, St. Peter’s Evangelical
Lutheran Church of Metz, St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church of Rural Posen,
St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church of Moltke, and from Rev. Christian Schwan’s
diaries that are located in the St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church of Moltke.
Special credit goes to Norma nee Trapp Beebe for copying the St. Michael’s church records,
to Neil Altman for copying the St. John’s Hagensville and St. Peter’s Metz
records, and to Rich Boyd for copying the St. James Moltke records and the Rev. Schwan’s
diaries.

Generation No. 1
1. Friedrich 'Fritz' Hans Bade, Sr. was born December 29, 1839 in Prussia, and died November 09, 1912 in Rogers City [Presque Isle County], Michigan. He married Sophia Stenzig March 1866 in Prussia, daughter of Johann Stenzig and Flora Heinrich. She was born June 28, 1838 in Prussia, and died November 16, 1934 in Rogers City [Presque Isle County], Michigan. Friedrich & Sophia are buried in Memorial Park Cemetery – Rogers City, MI.
'Fritz' homesteaded 160 acres of land in Belknap Township, Section # 14, 15, 22 - Range 34 N 4E - dated 13 Feb 1878.
From the 75th Anniversary Edition of the Advance is the following article: "March 16, 1882 - If you want to see a handsome frame house, equal to almost any in Wayne county, with magnificent stone cellars, clean dairy and beautifully kept farm yard, call on Mr. Frederick Bade, of the town of Belknap. His house and surroundings are a credit to himself and the county."
Another article from the same Edition: " July 12, 1883 - Mr. Fritz Bade of the town of Belknap, never does things by halves. He is now erecting a large frame barn on his farm in that township. The building is 36x56 feet, and the smallest stick of timber thereon is 6x8 in. in size."
The ship manifest shows the first name to be Hans. Evidently, he conveniently had it changed upon arrival in America. The following is shown in German To America, Volume 17 - page 121:
Hans Bade, 28 wife Sophie, 27. arrived 30 July 1866 on the ship BORUSSIA.
He and his wife left for the US on their honeymoon. They left Hamburg, Germany on April 16 1866 on the ship Borussia and arrived in New York on 30 July 1866. They first lived in Detroit where he was employed as a brick layer. It is unknown just when he and his family of 4 moved to the Rogers City area. Two sons were born in Detroit: Henry in May of 1866 and William in November of 1869. Daughter Mary was born on their farm in Belknap Township on November 26, 1871. They must have left Detroit between these dates. He got his farm from the US Government on February 13, 1878 under the Homestead Act, a document that Walt Hempel was given by Kay Fuhrman who owns the property now.
Clara Bade said her mother, Maggie, said that Fritz had a brother in Detroit when Fritz lived there. However, he moved farther west, to Wisconsin or Illinois. Maggie Bade used to write to him, and he to her for a few years. Then she never heard from him again. Maggie married Willie [William Bade] in 1892. It seems like she must have known the unnamed Bade who must have disappeared around the late 1890's.

Notes of Gustie & Henry from Walt Hempel:
Gustie was born in Germany in 1869. About two and a half years later she came to America with her parents and an older brother (August) and older sister (Minnie). They arrived in New York on May 14, 1872 on the ship Magdalene from Bremen, Germany - per ship logs. Gustie was not listed in the ship log, but a Friederich, age 1, was. This had to be an error.
Her family arrived in Detroit, Michigan, five days later - and the next day her sister Mary was born there. Sometime in the next two years they traveled by ship to the northern Michigan port on Lake Huron called Rogers City. Her father began a farm by home steading in Belknap Township, just a short ways down the road from a rail road logging station where logs were shipped by rail to other parts of the state and country. This location was known as the South Rogers corner. The railroad tracks were later extended east and north of South Rogers and went through the center of the Flemming farm. Gustie grew up on this family farm.
In January of 1898, at age 28, she married Henry Bade who had a farm slightly over a mile north of the Flemming farm. This was her lifetime home. Three years later she gave birth to a son, Alfred, and two years later, a daughter Lillian. She was a homemaker and farmer's wife - with all the hard work that went along with that in those days of clearing land and making a living at farming.
She was a rather quiet person around a group of people. Within her family she was a very kind and caring person - a wonderful grandmother to eight grandchildren. She was slightly cross-eyed, but it was overlooked by most people. When her son, Alfred, was married in 1926, the farm was turned over to him and his wife, Mildred. Gustie turned her homemaker role over to her daughter-in-law then. The two couples continued living together. Gustie became the silent, behind-the-scenes assistant house keeper who quietly worked diligently and never complained about her demoted role in the house which once was hers alone. She was a busy- body and in the midst of all farm work, especially making meals, gardening, house cleaning, canning and washing. She was a very special person.
In her last few years, Gustie became more quiet, withdrawn, somewhat confused and frail. She died peacefully of pneumonia in her bedroom with most of the family there on April 2, 1942, when she was 73. She was buried in the cemetery of her home church since her childhood, St. Michael Lutheran Church in Belknap Township, Michigan.
Henry was born in Detroit, Michigan, in 1867, about a year after his parents arrived there from Germany. At about age 4, he moved with his parents and brother Willian to home stead a farm in Belknap Township - about a mile west of Hagensville. He grew up on this farm and, as the eldest son, helped his father clear the land and build buildings for their farm of about 160 acres. Five younger siblings were born on the farm. In 1890 at age 23 as a bachelor, he bought his own farm of 160 acres from Emil Poch about 3 miles from his family farm in Belknap Township. Five years later (1895) his brother William and his wife Maggie and their two children moved from Alpena to live with Henry until they could get a house built on 40 acres that William bought across the road from Henry in 1892 from his father Fritz . Two years later (1897), William's family moved into their own house in December - a year after William's daughter was born at Henry's house. Henry married Gustie Flemming in January of 1898, about a month after William's family had moved to their own house.
He worked his farm all his life - for himself until 1926 when he gave the farm to his son Alfred, and for Alfred after that. He was a hard worker and always put farm work first. He was a wiry 5 foot 4 inches tall without an ounce of fat on him. He never seemed to tire out or to tire of working. He expected others to work like him too and enjoyed pushing his grandsons to keep busy working. He didn't believe in play time. He could be grouchy, especially with his grandsons when there was work he felt should be done. In his later years, he became much more pleasant around the farm and quite likeable. He always wanted to be doing something, even in his later years. He hated weeds and would spend hours in the garden and fields hoeing or pulling them. He was more of a serious person than a loving person, but his marriage proposal letter to Gustie reveals humility and caring - as he asked if she would have him for her husband.
In his later years he became more quiet and would mostly listen to conversations - often from next to the woodbox besides the stove in their kitchen. He was quite active physically until he died but was not as mentally alert during his last year. He was not ill for long. He died in his bedroom at home with most of the family there on December 30, between the holidays, in 1956 at age 89. His mother died at age 96 and his siblings were mostly in their 90's or 80's when they died. He was buried in the cemetery of his home church, St. Michael Lutheran in Belknap Township - about 3 1/2 miles from his farm.

Notes for Lillian & Walter from Walt Hempel:
Lillian was born in 1903 in the farmhouse of her parents, Henry and Gustie Bade in Belknap Township. She had a brother two years older than herself, Alfred. Her father had been farming for about 10 years when she was born. This was her home until she was around 20 when she went to Detroit to work. She completed six years of school at the Prell/Nagel/Bade School and later later called the Swan River School which was a half a mile away from their farmhouse. She had a piano at home and played it some.
In Detroit, she mostly worked as a housekeeper and a nanny for well-to-do families, including the Grinnell Piano family. She boarded at her cousin, Lillian Heymoss', home and was roommates with her friend, Martha Hoffman, and several other cousins.
While in Detroit she met and later married Walter Hempel in 1927 at age 24. They had a son in 1928 and moved in 1930 to the farmhouse her Uncle Willie Bade owned when she was growing up in Belknap Township. Two years later son Eldon was born, and four years after that son Ron was born.
She liked her previous city life best and was not pleased to go back to the farm with all the work associated with that. However, she was a hard-working farmer's wife and did both house work and outside farm work as help was needed in planting and harvesting crops and in milking cows and doing chores. She always had a flock of chickens - for eating and selling eggs. She was an excellent cook and put out many good meals, including big meals for relatives and friends from the Detroit area who would visit during the summers. She always had a large garden and canned many vegetables, fruits and meats. She did much sewing and repairing of clothes. She was active for many years in the Ladies Aid at St. Michael Lutheran Church.
When her husband died in 1960, her life changed greatly. She continued to live in the farmhouse by herself for a couple of years, but grew to dislike the large house. She agreed to purchase a mobile home and locate it in Hawks when it was decided that her son Eldon would purchase the farm. She fell and hurt herself there and then did not like living there by herself. Her trailer home was then moved across the driveway from the Hempel farmhouse where Eldon lived. About this time her memory started failing and she was diagnosed with hardening of the arteries. She got an apartment at Hill Top Manor in Rogers City and lived there for a few years. When problems started developing there, she was moved to a care center at Huron Beach for a while, and then entered the Extended Care Center of Rogers City Hospital. She stayed there until it closed down and then was moved to Tendercare in Alpena. It was there that she died in 1994 at age 91. She was buried in the cemetery of St. Michael Lutheran Church in Belknap Township.
Walter was born on the East side of Detroit in 1900 to parents who immigrated from Germany about 20 years before. They already had 10 sons. His father was a laborer and the family was poor. He went to a German speaking school at first and the last school years were in English. He completed just 6 years of school. When he was 12 years of age his mother died of TB. Two older brothers in their teens and two in their twenties lived at home at that time. It seems like the family broke apart then. Walter had to make it on his own from then on, with no apparent assistance from his father. He was taken in by a garden farming family and worked for them for his room and board. He also worked for a couple years for the brother-in-law of this family, also helping them in garden farming. This early farming experience gave him a love for the land and farming.
At age 17 he entered the U.S. Army during the later stages of World War I. He served in the cavalry and worked with and rode horses. When he got out of the Army two years later, he returned to Detroit and made his living there.
At age 27 he married Lillian Bade. They lived in a rented apartment on the East side of Detroit. It was during the Depression. He was unable to keep a job for very long. One of his jobs was a streetcar conductor. They had a son, Walter, Jr., a little over a year later. Because of the difficulty keeping a job in Detroit and with much encouragement from In-Laws Henry and Alfred Bade, the family of three moved to Belknap Twp. and took residence on Henry's brother William's vacant farm across the road from Henry's farm. The intent was for Walter to get a job in Calcite and farm part-time. The Calcite job never worked out. With much help from the Bade family, Walter began farming the 80 acre farm and bought it on a Land Contract. This farm was his livelihood. However, he sometimes did painting and carpenter jobs for others. In about 1939 he worked one winter for the Rural Electric Association (REA) clearing trees out of the way alongside of roads for the new electric lines that were coming into the farm area. He told the REA he would not be able to afford to hook up to electricity unless they gave him this job. He also worked full-time between 1943 and 1946, during World War II, at the Calcite Plant in Rogers City - while he continued farming, with his son's help. Several times during World War II he went to Detroit in the winter season to find temporary work there, but was never successful.
He was active is some community affairs. He was Chairman of the Swan River School Board for a number of years, until it was combined in the Rogers City School system. He was Chairman of St. Michael Lutheran church for about 20 years. He was a member and officer of the County Farm Bureau for a number of years. He also was on the Board of Review for Belknap Township, a job he was working on at the Township Hall when he had a heart attack and died there in 1960 at age 60.
Walter was a hard worker who never complained about working. He loved farming. He was about 5' 5" tall and muscular, about 175 pounds. He had much pain from rheumatism and arthritis over the years. At around age 58 he developed heart problems and had much angina pain. The only help for pain (and heart problems) in those days was aspirin, something he also took for his other pains. When he had his first heart attach, his doctor told him to sell the farm because he would no longer be able to do the work necessary for farming. Milking cows was one of the main sources of income in farming and he had a herd of over a dozen milking cows. Reluctantly, he sold them. He cut back on farm work and somewhat took it easy. In a year or so he felt much better and decided to go back to milking cows. He purchased cows from a number of places and soon had a better milking herd than before. But the heart pains came back within a year or so. In the winter of 1959 he was unable to walk from the house to the barn without having to stop and rest several times to get his breath back and get relief from the pain. But the family never knew or understood because he didn't complain. After a big snow storm in March the temperatures dropped under 20 below zero. He plowed the snow from the road to the barn with his tractor, so that the milk truck could get in to get the milk. This took a number of hours to do, and in that cold weather. He often stopped the tractor while plowing snow and covered his nose with his gloves. No one realized the heart pain he was having. The next day at the Township Hall he had the major heart attack which took his life.
He was buried in the cemetery of St. Michael Lutheran Church in Belknap.
