               The Original Prussian German families
To Belknap Township [Presque Isle County], MI
NOTE: All information provided is to be used only as a resource for anyone researching
family line that originally lived in Belknap Township. The list of original families to Belknap Township was obtained from the records of St.
Michael’s Evangelical Lutheran Church of Belknap and from the early U.S. federal
census records. A good number of their offspring moved to other townships
in Presque Isle County and to other locations in Michigan and other states. Most of the original surnames contain names of their offspring and their succeeding
generations. Church and census records were used for names and dates.
In some instances, other persons provided family data to expand family lines.
Regardless, this is not meant to be an accurate nor complete recording of a family tree. The Pastors who served St. Michael’s from 1873 to the present recorded names, baptisms,
confirmations, marriages, and deaths. Many names will also include baptism,
confirmation, and marriage dates from other church records: namely, St. John’s
Evangelical Lutheran Church of Rogers City, Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church
of Moltke, St. John’s Lutheran Church of Hagensville, St. Peter’s Evangelical
Lutheran Church of Metz, St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church of Rural Posen,
St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church of Moltke, and from Rev. Christian Schwan’s
diaries that are located in the St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church of Moltke. Special credit goes to Norma nee Trapp Beebe for copying the St. Michael’s church records,
to Neil Altman for copying the St. John’s Hagensville and St. Peter’s Metz
records, and to Rich Boyd for copying the St. James Moltke records and the Rev. Schwan’s
diaries. Submitted by Donald Henry Knopf [2 Oct 2008] BRAUN family to Belknap Township To read the family report: 1. Each person has a number. The “+” in front of a number means that person married and/or had children and will appear in the next generation with the SAME number. 2. Full names are written as recorded in church records. 3. Census records are written as originally recorded. Generation No. 1 1. Friedrich 'Fred'1 Braun, Jr. (son of Friedrich Bruhn, Sr. & Marie nee Konow) was born February 15, 1853 in Seltz, Mecklenburg/Schwerin, Vorpommern, Germany, and died December 08, 1927 in Belknap Township, Hawks, Michigan. He married Caroline 'Lena' Schmidt 1878 in Seltz, Mecklenberg, Vorpommern, Germany. She was born December 22, 1858 in Mecklenberg/Schwerin, Vorpommern, Germany, and died June 24, 1948 in Saginaw [Saginaw County], MI. Notes for Friedrich, Jr.s parents: Children of Friedrich Bruhn and Marie Konow are: A. Friedrich 'Fred'2 Braun, born February 15, 1853 in Seltz, Mecklenburg/Schwerin, Vorpommern, Germany; died December 08, 1927 in Belknap Township, Hawks, Michigan. Married Caroline Schmidt. *They are the BRAUN family to Belknap Township. B. Carl Christopher Bruhn, born October 1857 in Breesen, Mecklenburg/Schwerin, Vorpommern. He married Christine Bleich 1885 in Detroit. They lived their entire life in Wayne [Canton Township -Wayne County], MI. C. Johann 'John' Friedrich Bruhn, born September 15, 1859 in Breesen, Mecklenburg/Schwerin, Vorpommern, Germany; died March 23, 1940 in Detroit [Wayne County], Michigan. Wilhelm Hermann Hugo Bruhn, born 1862 in Breesen, Mecklenburg/Schwerin, Vorpommern; died 1949 in Houghton, MI. He married Augusta Johanna Mathilde Raether 1886 in Houghton, MI. They lived their entire life in Houghton , MI. E. Fredericke S. Bruhn, born September 1865 in Breesen, Mecklenburg/Schwerin, Vorpommern; died in Detroit [Wayne County], Michigan. She married Ernst G. Heier 1886 in Detroit, MI. They lived their life in Detroit. F. August Bruhn, born July 30, 1869 in Breesen, Mecklenburg/Schwerin, Vorpommern; died April 22, 1931 in Detroit [Wayne County], MI. He married Louisa M. Gaschinske 1891 in Detroit, MI. They lived their entire life in Detroit. Notes for Friedrich 'Fred' Braun: The Mecklenburg census of 1867 shows the family [Parents: Friedrich & Maria Bruhn and children: Friedrich, Jr., Carl, Johann, Wilhelm, & Fredericke] living in Breesen, Ritteramt Stavenhagen, Mecklenburg-Schwerin. It is difficult to determine the exact year Fred & Caroline came to America. The census records are no help since they give varying years of entry to America. From research done by Amy Bruhn, living in Dearborn, there is evidence that the parents of Fred and his siblings came to America between 1881 and 1882. They all settled in Detroit. Exactly when Fred & Caroline came to Belknap Township is unknown, but sometime before January 1892, since daughter Clara was born 7 Jan 1892 in Belknap. The last name is shown as Brauhn, Bruhn, Braun, & Brown on records. Friedrich’s name in church records shows Brauhn, but on the tombstone in St. Michael’s Cemetery - Belknap is written ‘Friedrich Brown’ The cemetery record states he died of chronic gastritis as recorded by the Dr. Wm Arscott. More About Friedrich 'Fred' Braun: Burial: December 10, 1927, St. Michael's Cemetery - Belknap Notes for Caroline 'Lena' Schmidt: Caroline was a midwife. She helped many Belknap mother's deliver children - many times without a doctor present. Caroline is buried in Saginaw, MI. On the tombstone of her husband, Fred, in the St. Michael's [Belknap] Cemetery is engraved December 22, 1858 - _____ [no death date]. When it was engraved, it was probably thought Caroline's burial would be in St. Michael's. Also inscribed is "I know that my Redeemer Liveth". Obituary: Mrs. Caroline Brown, 1395 Vincent St., died at the home of her daughter, Mrs, Ida Evans, this morning, age 89. Caroline Smith was born Dec. 22, 1858, in Germany. Married there to Frederick Brown. About 65 years ago they came to America and Detroit. She lived in Presque Isle County over 50 years, coming to Saginaw 2 years ago. Mr. Brown died Dec. 8, 1926. More About Caroline 'Lena' Schmidt: Burial: Forest Lawn Cemetery - Saginaw, MI The 1900 Michigan, Presque Isle County, Belknap Township Federal Census [E.D. 147 - page 1A] enumerated 1 June 1900 by Walley H. Hein shows: BROWN, Frederick, head, 47, born Feb 1853 Germany, married 22 years, to America in 1887, in America 13 years, naturalized, farmer BROWN, Lena, wife, 41, born Dec 1858 Germany, married 22 years, to America 1879, in America 21 years, 5 children born with 4 living BROWN, Emil, son, 15, born Dec 1884 Michigan, farm laborer BROWN, Clara, daughter, 8, born Jan 1892 Michigan, at school BROWN, Hattie, daughter, 5, born Oct 1894 Michigan, at school There has to be a mistake in the date of Fred's entry to America. Since they were married 22 years in 1900, and Emil was born in Michigan in 1884, would indicate that Lena's entry to America in 1879 is probably incorrect. The 1910 Michigan, Presque Isle County, Belknap Township Federal Census [Roll T770_492 - E.D. 171 - page 10B] enumerated 13 May 1910 by William Hardies, Jr. shows: BRAUN, Emil, head, 25, single, born Michigan, parents born Germany, farmer BRAUN, Fred, father, 57, married 31 years, born Germany, to America 1881, own income BRAUN, Karoline, mother, 52, married 31 years, born Germany, to America 1881, own income BRAUN, Hattie, sister, 15, born Michigan, parents born Germany, servant, private family The 1920 Michigan, Presque Isle County, Belknap Township Federal Census [E.D. - page 1A] enumerated 2 January 1920 by Alex McLennan shows: BROWN, Fredrick, head, 65 BROWN, Karoline, wife, 61 The 1930 Michigan, Presque Isle County, Rogers Cit village federal census [ED 17; page 25A] enumerated 22 Jan 1930 by John Ferdelmann, Jr. shows: Living at 155 N. Braun: Burial: Forest Lawn Cemetery - Saginaw, MI Notes for George Evans: George was born in Canada and was approximately one year old when the 1870 census was taken, so he must have immigrated with his parents as an infant. The family settled in Harrisville upon their immigration. George's father was a farmer in 1870 and two more children were born, Rosa in 1872 and Charles in 1875. George's mother died soon after however, because in 1880 his father was working on the wharves and a servant, Esther, was caring for the children.
