              The Original Prussian German families
To Belknap Township [Presque Isle County], MI
NOTE: All information provided is to be used only as a resource for anyone researching
family line that originally lived in Belknap Township. The list of original families to Belknap Township was obtained from the records of St.
Michael’s Evangelical Lutheran Church of Belknap and from the early U.S. federal
census records. A good number of their offspring moved to other townships
in Presque Isle County and to other locations in Michigan and other states. Most of the original surnames contain names of their offspring and their succeeding
generations. Church and census records were used for names and dates.
In some instances, other persons provided family data to expand family lines.
Regardless, this is not meant to be an accurate nor complete recording of a family tree. The Pastors who served St. Michael’s from 1873 to the present recorded names, baptisms,
confirmations, marriages, and deaths. Many names will also include baptism,
confirmation, and marriage dates from other church records: namely, St. John’s
Evangelical Lutheran Church of Rogers City, Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church
of Moltke, St. John’s Lutheran Church of Hagensville, St. Peter’s Evangelical
Lutheran Church of Metz, St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church of Rural Posen,
St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church of Moltke, and from Rev. Christian Schwan’s
diaries that are located in the St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church of Moltke. Special credit goes to Norma nee Trapp Beebe for copying the St. Michael’s church records,
to Neil Altman for copying the St. John’s Hagensville and St. Peter’s Metz
records, and to Rich Boyd for copying the St. James Moltke records and the Rev. Schwan’s
diaries. Submitted by Donald Henry Knopf [7 Oct 2008] BREGE family to Belknap Township To read the family report: 1. Each person has a number. The “+” in front of a number means that person married and/or had children and will appear in the next generation with the SAME number. 2. Full names are written as recorded in church records. 3. Census records are written as originally recorded. [Brief background history of Christian Brege to Belknap Township] The BREGE to Belknap Township file begins with CHRISTIAN FRIEDRICH BREGE [15 Feb 1857 – 13 May 1938]. The file begins after this introduction. Christian was the son of Johann ‘John’ Friedrich & Dorothea nee Strassburg Brege – both of whom are buried in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Moltke Township. They and their children: William, Friedrich, Johanna, Christian, Ferdinand, John, Ernest, & Auguste were born in Battin, Breussow, Prenzlau, Brandenburg, Prussia. Johann and Dorothea Brege came to America with their 6 living children in March 1870. Also on the same ship was the Karsten family. They settled in Wolcottsville [Niagara County], New York for a period of 2 to 3 years. Other Brege families and relatives had settled earlier in the area of Wolcottsville, New York. The 1870 New York, Niagara County, Royalton Township, Post Office of Gas Pork, N.Y. Federal Census [Roll M593_1055; Page 537; actual census page 106; Image 464] enumerated 11 July 1870 shows: BRAY, John, 43, Laborer, personal property valued at $100, no Real Estate value, born Prussia BRAY, Dora, wife, 43, Keeping House, born Prussia BRAY, Frederick, son, 18, At School, born Prussia BRAY, Christian, son, 13, At School, born Prussia BRAY, Ferdinand, son, 9, At School, born Prussia BRAY, Ernest, son, 5, born Prussia BRAY, August, daughter, 3, born Prussia NOTE: The enumerator did write Bray for BREGE. The family enumerated just ahead was the John & Rachel Schlaeger family, who homesteaded in Belknap Township.in 1873. Their son, Christian was confirmed in 1871 and his brother Ferdinand in 1872 in St. Michael’s - Wolcottsville, NY. Later that year their parents, John & Dorothea and their family moved to Crawford's Quarry where their oldest child, Wilhelm was already living. In 1873 their daughter. Johanna, was planning to marry Johann Schaedig. Church bans were published 6 weeks prior to their marriage in 1873 at the newly founded St. John’s Lutheran Church. Upon the arrival of the first Called Lutheran minister, Josef Antonius Bohn, they were finally married. When the family arrived in Wolcottsville, NY, they did not find available land to purchase since that area was settled by families already beginning in the late 1830’s by Evangelical Lutherans from the same villages where John & Dorothea came from. All of those early families to Wolcottsville established the many Lutheran Churches in Niagara County, NY. Sons and daughters of those original families were forced to find other locations for available land. Beginning in the 1860’s families in Niagara County, NY heard of land available in Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, and Michigan. Some of the Brege families who settled earlier before John & Dorothea arrived in NY, moved to Marathon County, WI and to Macomb and Wayne Counties in Michigan. Others who were leaving the area of Wolcottsville, NY were the Hopp, Grambau, Adrian, Klee, Schlaeger, Brandt, Bredow families – among others. A good number of those families first settled in the Detroit area of Roseville and Mt. Clemens before heading north to Crawford’s Quarry [Rogers City today]. The family lines to Belknap Township from Wolcottsville, NY chose the name, St. Michael’s Evangelical Lutheran Church since they were members of the St. Michael’s in Wolcottsville. The original Johann Brege Homestead in Moltke Township is the farm now owned [1990] by Erhardt Pauly on Spens Road. Their youngest son, Ernest Brege who married Anna Karsten, operated the original Johann Brege homestead farm until they sold it to Erhardt Pauly. Their 2nd oldest son, Friedrich who married Justine Müller, lived across the road to the south of Johann's farm. That property is also owned by Erhardt Pauly [1990]. Their daughter, Johanna married Johann Schaedig. Their Homestead was on the Church Road. The farm was sold to their nephew, Herbert Ganier [1944 -1945]. Son, Christian Brege homesteaded 160 acres in Belknap Township, married Maria Kußs. She died and Christian then married Alvina [nee Hoeft] Zinke. Together they raised a family of 20 children including those born to Maria and to Alvina Zinke. Son, Ferdinand, married Ernestine Karsten, and homesteaded land just north of his parents on the Spens Road in Moltke Township. All of their children remained single and moved to Detroit with the exception of Hedwig. Hedwig is buried in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Moltke. Their other children are all buried in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Detroit, MI. The Ferdinand Brege farm is now owned [1990] by the descendants of the Ernest Brege branch The 1880 Moltke Township, Presque Isle County, Michigan Federal Census [Roll: T9_601; Family History Film: 1254601; Page: 584C; Enumeration District: 281] enumerated 3 June 1880 by Andrew E. Banks shows: BREGE, Johann, head, 54, head, Farmer, born Prussia BREGE, Dorothea, wife, 52, Keeping house, born Prussia BREGE, Christian, son, single, 23, at home, born Prussia BREGE, Ferdinand, 21, son, single, at home, born Prussia BREGE, Ernst, son, 16, at home, born Prussia BREGE, Augusta, daughter, 14, at home, born Prussia Christian Friedrich Brege, Sr. family file Generation No. 1 1. She was born October 10, 1853 in Prussia, and died July 10, 1907 in Belknap Township, Hawks, Michigan. He married (2) Wilhelmine 'Alvine' Hoeft January 23, 1909 in St. Michael's Evangelical Lutheran Church - Belknap, daughter of Johann Hoeft and Caroline nee LIETZOW. She was born September 20, 1857 in Barlomin, Kreis Neustadt, West Prussia, Prussia, and died December 03, 1940 in Moltke Township - Rogers City [Presque Isle County], Michigan. Christian & Maria are buried in St. Michael’s Lutheran Cemetery – Belknap; while Alvina is buried in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery – Moltke. Christian became a widower at age 60. He then married a widow, Alvina Hoeft Zinke. Christian & Maria would raise 8 children on their 160 acre homestead farm in Belknap located 1 mile east of St. Michael’s Church at the southwest intersection of Highway 638 and South Rogers Road. After Maria’s death in 1907, he deeded the farm over to his children. Christian Sr. was an astute Christian. He was well versed in Scripture and also had a wonderful singing voice. He was a long time member of the St. Michael's Church choir. If music was unavailable, he led the congregation in singing. As Bob Zinke recalls: "When we visited the farm, it was a custom that we children would sing church hymns. He enjoyed singing with us." Christian Brege obit: Christian Brege, born Feb 15, 1857, died May 13, 1938 at age 81 years, 2 months, 28 days. The St. Michael's Church records show Christian was from Belknap township as was Maria Friedericke Johanna. They were married by the Rev. Joel David Druckenmiller. Their witnesses were William & Fredrick Brege. The 1900 Michigan, Presque Isle County, Belknap Township Federal Census [E.D. 147 - page 7B & 8A] enumerated 15 June 1900 by Walley H. "Alvina [Hoeft] Zinke was a widow, whose husband, "Carl" Zinke died 14 May 1906, when she married Christian Brege Sr. 23 January 1909 at St. Michael's Lutheran Church in Belknap Township. They lived in Belknap on the Brege Homestead on the southwest corner of road 638 and the South Rogers Road. According to Bob Zinke, "when they were old - Grandmother (Alvina) and Grandpa [Christian Sr] Brege, unable to cope, the Christian Brege children and the Carl Zinke children got together and made some kind of deal to tend them with Uncle Charley and Mary Zinke in Moltke. Both Christian and Alvine died in Moltke - Grandpa Brege was buried in Belknap and Grandma Alvina Brege was buried in Moltke. Alvina Hoeft was married for over 25 years to Carl Zinke and over 25 years to Christian Brege Sr." "Also, I never spoke with Grandma Brege a whole lot. I did speak some German that I refer to as 'Baby German'. It was the first language I learned to speak but I never built on it as we moved to Rogers City and then it was English, and German was left behind. We did converse a little with my little German and her little English. She also had bad arthritis and then crutches became the norm until she was unable to walk in the last years of her life in Moltke." BREGE, Christian, step-father, 73, married at age 24, born Germany, to America 1870, farmer BREGE, Alvina, mother, 72, married at age 20, born Germany, to America 1880 Bob Zinke relates the following: "After Christian's first wife died, this left him with a large family of 7 boys and 1 girl. He was in dire need of a wife. His daughter, Johanna was only 9 years old and not ready for responsibility in running the house. So one day Christian hooked his trusty steed to the buggy and off to the Zinke Hill in Moltke to converse with the widow, Alvina [Hoeft] Zinke, who also had lost here husband. This meeting resulted in Christian Brege making a marriage proposal. Alvine accepted. They married and lived on the farm he owned in Belknap at the corner of Highway 638 and South Rogers Road. The farm borders on the west against the east of the Knopf farm. My dad and your dad (Don), Henry Knopf, became close friends when he moved to Belknap. The story is that my dad [Herman Zinke], your dad [Henry Knopf], and my Uncle John Brege got together in the evenings and played many game of spitzer. My mother, Bertha Hardies, did a lot of baby-sitting at the John Brege's. This means my Mother would sit in, and be a fourth person for playing spitzer. These card playing sessions eventually led my Mom and Dad in marriage at the altar at St. Michael's Church in Belknap on 24 September 1927." "My Dad was 12 or 13 years old at the time he moved to Belknap. He grew up like a brother to all six of the Brege boys and one girl on what we referred to as Brege Road. Our family was always included in any of the Brege affairs. I knew all of them well because I spent summers on the Hardies and John Brege farms as a teenager - mostly at the Brege farm. I knew all about the Trout Creek that begins from a spring on Hardies farm, and meandering to the next farms of Henry Knopf, Christian Brege and John Brege. and finally running into Trout River that flows through Rogers City," "From Moltke, Alvina brought her son, Herman Zinke, who later married Bertha Hardies of Belknap; and daughter, Lenora Zinke, who later married Charles Schram of Belknap. Therefore, Herman Zinke and Lenore Zinke grew up in Belknap. It is also the reason that the children of Herman Zinke and the Schrams knew Alvine [Hoeft Zinke] Brege as Grandma Brege. Alvine's 16 year old daughter, Emma, may have gone to Cheboygan to be with her older sister, Alvine [Hoeft] Jana." Children of Christian Brege and Maria Kußs are: 2 i. Put mixed apples in a baking dish. Rub other ingredients together and put over top as crust. Bake 30 to 40 minutes. Serve warm with whipped cream. Marriage Notes for Johannes Brege and Helene Hardies: Witnesses at John & Helen’s marriage on 2 Dec 1915 by the Rev. Wilhelm Schoenow were Eduard Hardies, Lena Brege, Herbert Stephan, and Nora Zink. In 1898, John’s father, Christian Brege, bought the south east quarter of Section 16 in Belknap Township. In 1914, John would buy and have title to a 40 acre parcel [northwest of the intersection of Highway 638 & South Rogers Road] that would become the core of the farm he developed. During the next year he would build a small farmhouse and marry Helen Hardies. Three daughters would be born in the small house. In 1919 he built a 40 x 76 foot bank barn, north of the farmhouse. As the years passed he added other parcels of land increasing the total to nearly 400 acres. As the family grew to 5 children, a new, much larger farmhouse was built in 1925 that included eight foot ceilings. John became a well-known farmer in Belknap. He developed a registered herd of Holstein dairy cows. He could be seen in later years, in spite of spinal arthritis, farming with his Fordson tractor. John and Helen were active the Presque Isle County Farm Bureau. They were active, life-long members of St. Michael's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Belknap. Sons Melvin & Earl worked on the farm with their dad until the Korean War. Melvin was drafted into the Marine Corps in 1951.
