The Original Prussian German families
To Belknap Township [Presque Isle County], MI
NOTE: All information provided is to be used only as a resource for anyone researching
family line that originally lived in Belknap Township.
The list of original families to Belknap Township was obtained from the records of St.
Michael’s Evangelical Lutheran Church of Belknap and from the early U.S. federal
census records. A good number of their offspring moved to other townships
in Presque Isle County and to other locations in Michigan and other states.
Most of the original surnames contain names of their offspring and their succeeding
generations. Church and census records were used for names and dates.
In some instances, other persons provided family data to expand family lines.
Regardless, this is not meant to be an accurate nor complete recording of a family tree.
The Pastors who served St. Michael’s from 1873 to the present recorded names, baptisms,
confirmations, marriages, and deaths. Many names will also include baptism,
confirmation, and marriage dates from other church records: namely, St. John’s
Evangelical Lutheran Church of Rogers City, Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church
of Moltke, St. John’s Lutheran Church of Hagensville, St. Peter’s Evangelical
Lutheran Church of Metz, St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church of Rural Posen,
St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church of Moltke, and from Rev. Christian Schwan’s
diaries that are located in the St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church of Moltke.
Special credit goes to Norma nee Trapp Beebe for copying the St. Michael’s church records,
to Neil Altman for copying the St. John’s Hagensville and St. Peter’s Metz
records, and to Rich Boyd for copying the St. James Moltke records and the Rev. Schwan’s
diaries.

NOFFZE family to Belknap Township
Generation No. 1
1. Theodore Augustus Christian1 Noffze, Sr. (son of Carl HeinrichA, ) was born July 14, 1842 in Überlauf, Kreis Stolp, Hinterpommern, Prussia, and died March 11, 1914 in Belknap Township (Hawks), Michigan. He married Emilie 'Amelia' Maria Pieper 1870 in Detroit [Wayne County], Michigan, daughter of Franz Rehbein and Charlotte Lemberg. She was born November 09, 1851 in Streblin, Kreis Neustadt, Reg. bei Danzig, West Prussia, Prussia, and died May 22, 1919 in Belknap Township, Hawks, Michigan.
Upon arrival to America in 1868, and consequently to Detroit, Michigan, Theodore & Emilie were greeted by the families of Wilhelm Hardies, Michael Elowsky, Herman Hoeft, and other families who had recently emigrated from the same region of Prussia [near Danzig that today is Gedansk]. These men were members of the German Club in Detroit. They heard of free land available in Presque Isle County, and wanted to have their own farm. The men went to check out the situation, and in 1870 their wives and rest of the family came north to clear the land that they homesteaded In Belknap Township.
The Detroit Land Office record shows Theodore Noffze received a land grant of 160 acres in Belknap Township. The date listed is 20 Nov 1875. Michael Elowsky claimed a land grant to the south of Theodore’s; while Wilhelm Hardies claimed his land to the north of Theodore’s.
Theodore & Emilie were instrumental in the establishment of the St. Michael’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Belknap. They became charter members on August 6, 1873. Their son, Paul Noffze, and grandson, Richard Noffze became Lutheran Church pastors.

Mr. Noffze was feeling in the best of health and was assisting his son, richard, in killing some hogs, when he was taken with a fainting spell. He was taken into the house, where he died soon after without regaining consciousness.
In the dath of Mr. Noffze, Presque Isle county loses one of its best citizens and a man who had spent nearly 50 years in that county. Born in Germany, Mr. Noffze came to America at an early age. Soon after he went to Presque Isle County, where he took up a homestead. He later purchased 40 acres more land and carved out of the wilderness one of the best farms in Presque Isle county.
Mr. Noffze had been elected supervisor of his township on various occasions and also held other offices, within the gift of the people of his county. His farm is located eight miles from Rogers City and when he first went there, not a road ran to it.

Herman Mende of Rogers. The funeral wil be held from the Germany Lutheran Church Sunday afternoon. Rev. Schoen officiating. Mr. Noffze and family will go to Belknap for the funeral.

NOTES from the Burr Oak Acorn [Newspaper]
July 1908.....Burr Oak Acorn
Last Friday evening the members of the German Lutheran church gave a reception on the church lawn to their new pastor, Rev Paul Noffze and family, a large number of members being present to greet him. Ice cream and cake was served, and the High School orchestra rendered numerous selections which were very much enjoyed by all, and much credit is due them for the able and masterly manner of delivery.
Sunday, Rev. Noffze was installed in his new field of labor by Rev. W. T. Schalm of Sturgis, who delivered a most excellent sermon for the occasion, and which was heard by a large congregation.
Rev. Noffze comes well recommend and we believe he will be very popular here. He is a genial, wholesome man and The Acorn is glad to bid him welcome.

NOTES from the history of Emmanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church [Avilla, Noble County, Indiana]
(The church's name originally was Emanuel's Evangelical German Lutheran Church. The spelling changed sometime later to Emmanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church. During Pastor Noffze's tenure, between 1925 and 1940, the spelling changed to Immanuel.)
Church day school closed in 1922
After a few years at Immanuel, Pastor Purzner suffered deteriorating health. The congregation agreed to close Immanuel day school on April 23, 1922 because of the pastor's health. In 1923 Pastor Purzner asked the congregation to release him. But the congregation persuaded him to serve longer and even agreed to drive him to his visits. However, after repeated requests, the congregation accepted his resignation on March 1, 1925.
Pastor Paul C. Noffze was then extended a call which he accepted. He was installed at Immanuel on June 14,1925 and served the congregation until his death 15 years later.
In 1926, Pastor Noffze helped organize the Ladies Aid with his wife, Dorathea, serving an active role in the club. The hall was enlarged in 1927 after the congregation bought Dr. Veazy's barn nearby. The church balcony was built in 1931 with the Ladies Aid bearing the expense. In 1931, the Walther League paid for the placing of a cross on the tower of the church.
In 1935, the congregation voted to discontinue the German services.
In a special meeting of Oct. 22, 1939, Pastor Noffze recommended the purchase of a new organ for the church at a cost of $1,890. On Nov. 5, the congregation agreed to purchase a new organ and in a special meeting on Dec. 24,1939, the congregation voted to purchase the organ which had been installed on a trial basis.
Serving on the committee to raise funds for the organ were: Walter Berkes, Robert Keck, Erwin Hess, Floyd Hoot, Ida Wolf, Ollie Weimer, Alma Weimer, Rena Hess, Floyd Keck and Charles Wolf.
Death claims Pastor Noffze, Dec. 23, 1940
