The Original Prussian German families
To Belknap Township [Presque Isle County], MI
NOTE: All information provided is to be used only as a resource for anyone researching
family line that originally lived in Belknap Township.
The list of original families to Belknap Township was obtained from the records of St.
Michael’s Evangelical Lutheran Church of Belknap and from the early U.S. federal
census records. A good number of their offspring moved to other townships
in Presque Isle County and to other locations in Michigan and other states.
Most of the original surnames contain names of their offspring and their succeeding
generations. Church and census records were used for names and dates.
In some instances, other persons provided family data to expand family lines.
Regardless, this is not meant to be an accurate nor complete recording of a family tree.
The Pastors who served St. Michael’s from 1873 to the present recorded names, baptisms,
confirmations, marriages, and deaths. Many names will also include baptism,
confirmation, and marriage dates from other church records: namely, St. John’s
Evangelical Lutheran Church of Rogers City, Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church
of Moltke, St. John’s Lutheran Church of Hagensville, St. Peter’s Evangelical
Lutheran Church of Metz, St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church of Rural Posen,
St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church of Moltke, and from Rev. Christian Schwan’s
diaries that are located in the St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church of Moltke.
Special credit goes to Norma nee Trapp Beebe for copying the St. Michael’s church records,
to Neil Altman for copying the St. John’s Hagensville and St. Peter’s Metz
records, and to Rich Boyd for copying the St. James Moltke records and the Rev. Schwan’s
diaries.

Marriage Notes for Albert Sellke and Auguste Elowsky:
Witnesses at Auguste & Albert's marriage by Rev. Bruno Potzger were Ferdinand Sellke and Marie Elowsky.
Albert and Augusta owned and operated the Sellke General Store in Hawks from about 1890 until 1938.
They also built and operated the Sellke Butter Bowl and Shingle Mill just west of Hawks in about 1902. The area of the Mill became known as "Frenchtown." Large maple trees were cut and the logs brought in to the mill to be used to make the large butter bowls and paddles. The bowls and implements were used to work the buttermilk out of the freshly churned butter before it was salted and stored in a cool place.
The youngsters in Hawks were the beneficiaries of the factory "seconds" tossed out for them. The large wooden bowls made perfect "flying saucers" and were ridden down the snow covered hills around Hawks for many years.
Shingles were generally sawed from red cedar blocks, and were used in many local construction building projects.
The Mill was closed down in the 1920s because of a lack of demand for either of the products produced there, and the buildings have long since been town down leaving little trace of the activity that once took place in them.

CARAMEL SPONGE CAKE
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 3/4 cups sifted pastry flour
3 level teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon vanilla
4 eggs
1/2 cup boiling water
1/4 teaspoon salt
Put 1 cup sugar in saucepan and heat on stove, stirring until the sugar is all melted and of a light brown color, being careful not to let it burn.
Add boiling water and stir until all lumps are dissolved. This makes about 1 cup of syrup.
Beat 4 egg whites until stiff. Add beaten yolks and remaining half cup sugar.
Mix salt, baking powder and flour. Add to the egg mixture alternately with the hot syrup. Add vanilla.
Bake like any sponge cake in a moderate oven. Frost with a caramel frosting.
Caramel Frosting:
1/2 cup butter
1 cup brown sugar firmly packed
1/4 cup milk
1 1/3 to 2 cups confectioners sugar
Melt butter; add brown sugar and cook over low heat 2 minutes, stirring constantly. Add milk and continue stirring until mixture comes to a boil. Remove from heat and cool. Add confectioners sugar until of right consistency to spread.
