St. Michael’s Evangelical Lutheran Church death records
Belknap Township [Presque Isle County], MI
The following names are from the church death records. Not all persons are buried in the church cemetery in Belknap. The Pastors who served the church from 1873 to the present officiated at these funerals. If the Pastor entered that a burial was in another cemetery or if my data base shows another cemetery location, that will be listed. Otherwise, all burials are assumed to be in the St. Michael’s – Belknap Cemetery.
I included the name of a husband and/or wife even though they were not listed in the death records. Most names will show baptism names and maiden names. Census records and family history is also included. The listing of names is alphabetized by family surname.
Special credit goes to Norma nee Trapp Beebe for copying the St. Michael’s church records and to Neil Altman for copying the St. John’s Hagensville and St. Peter’s Metz records.

BADE, Heinrich ‘Henry’ Friedrich Wilhelm 29 May 1867 – 30 Dec 1956
BADE, Augusta Friederike Anna [Flemming] 9 Nov 1869 – 2 Apr 1942
Ship record & early history of Henry’s parents:
The ship manifest shows the first name of his father to be Hans. Evidently, he conveniently had it changed to Friedrich upon arrival in America. The following is shown in German To America, Volume 17 - page 121:
Hans Bade, 28 wife Sophie nee Stenzig, 27. Arrived 30 July 1866 on the ship BORUSSIA.
Hans and Sophie left for the US on their honeymoon. They left Hamburg, Germany on April 16 1866 on the ship Borussia and arrived in New York on 30 July 1866. They first lived in Detroit where he was employed as a brick layer. It is unknown just when he and his family of 4 moved to the Rogers City area. Two sons were born in Detroit: Henry in May of 1866 and William in November of 1869. Daughter Mary was born on their farm in Belknap Township on November 26, 1871. They must have left Detroit between these dates. He got his farm from the US Government on February 13, 1878 under the Homestead Act, a document that Walt Hempel was given by Kay Fuhrman who owns the property now.
Ship record of Augusta:
Augusta, her parents, Heinrich & Caroline nee Keske Felmming arrived in New York on 14 May 1872 on the ship Madgalene. The ship register (Germans to America, Vol. 27, page 69) lists August, Wilhelmine and a son, Friedrich age 1, but not their daugher, Augusta Friederike. (This is assumed to be a clerical error.) NOTE: Refer to Heinrich & Caroline FLEMMING for more family history.

Note from Walt Hempel:
Gustie was born in Germany in 1869. About two and a half years later she came to America with her parents and an older brother (August) and older sister (Minnie). They arrived in New York on May 14, 1872 on the ship Magdalene from Bremen, Germany - per ship logs. Gustie was not listed in the ship log, but a Friederich, age 1, was. This had to be an error.
Her family arrived in Detroit, Michigan, five days later - and the next day her sister Mary was born there. Sometime in the next two years they traveled by ship to the northern Michigan port on Lake Huron called Rogers City. Her father began a farm by home steading in Belknap Township, just a short ways down the road from a rail road logging station where logs were shipped by rail to other parts of the state and country. This location was known as the South Rogers corner. The railroad tracks were later extended east and north of South Rogers and went through the center of the Flemming farm. Gustie grew up on this family farm.
In January of 1898, at age 28, she married Henry Bade who had a farm slightly over a mile north of the Flemming farm. This was her lifetime home. Three years later she gave birth to a son, Alfred, and two years later, a daughter Lillian. She was a homemaker and farmer's wife - with all the hard work that went along with that in those days of clearing land and making a living at farming.
She was a rather quiet person around a group of people. Within her family she was a very kind and caring person - a wonderful grandmother to eight grandchildren. She was slightly cross-eyed, but it was overlooked by most people. When her son, Alfred, was married in 1926, the farm was turned over to him and his wife, Mildred. Gustie turned her homemaker role over to her daughter-in-law then. The two couples continued living together. Gustie became the silent, behind-the-scenes assistant house keeper who quietly worked diligently and never complained about her demoted role in the house which once was hers alone. She was a busy- body and in the midst of all farm work, especially making meals, gardening, house cleaning, canning and washing. She was a very special person.
In her last few years, Gustie became more quiet, withdrawn, somewhat confused and frail. She died peacefully of pneumonia in her bedroom with most of the family there on April 2, 1942, when she was 73. She was buried in the cemetery of her home church since her childhood, St. Michael Lutheran Church in Belknap Township, Michigan.
Henry was born in Detroit, Michigan, in 1867, about a year after his parents arrived there from Germany. At about age 4, he moved with his parents and brother Willian to home stead a farm in Belknap Township - about a mile west of Hagensville. He grew up on this farm and, as the eldest son, helped his father clear the land and build buildings for their farm of about 160 acres. Five younger siblings were born on the farm. In 1890 at age 23 as a bachelor, he bought his own farm of 160 acres from Emil Poch about 3 miles from his family farm in Belknap Township. Five years later (1895) his brother William and his wife Maggie and their two children moved from Alpena to live with Henry until they could get a house built on 40 acres that William bought across the road from Henry in 1892 from his father Fritz . Two years later (1897), William's family moved into their own house in December - a year after William's daughter was born at Henry's house. Henry married Gustie Flemming in January of 1898, about a month after William's family had moved to their own house.
He worked his farm all his life - for himself until 1926 when he gave the farm to his son Alfred. He was a hard worker and always put farm work first. He was a wiry 5 foot 4 inches tall without an ounce of fat on him. He never seemed to tire out or to tire of working. He expected others to work like him too and enjoyed pushing his grandsons to keep busy working. He didn't believe in play time. He could be grouchy, especially with his grandsons when there was work he felt should be done. In his later years, he became much more pleasant around the farm and quite likeable. He always wanted to be doing something, even in his later years. He hated weeds and would spend hours in the garden and fields hoeing or pulling them. He was more of a serious person than a loving person, but his marriage proposal letter to Gustie reveals humility and caring - as he asked if she would have him for her husband.
In his later years he became more quiet and would mostly listen to conversations - often from next to the woodbox besides the stove in their kitchen. He was quite active physically until he died but was not as mentally alert during his last year. He was not ill for long. He died in his bedroom at home with most of the family there on December 30, between the holidays, in 1956 at age 89. His mother died at age 96 and his siblings were mostly in their 90's or 80's when they died. He was buried in the cemetery of his home church, St. Michael Lutheran in Belknap Township - about 3 1/2 miles from his farm.

Notes from Bob Zinke:
"Alvina [Hoeft] Zinke was a widow, whose husband, "Carl" Zinke died 14 May 1906, when she married Christian Brege Sr. They lived in Belknap on the Brege Homestead on the southwest corner of road 638 and the South Rogers Road. When they were old - Grandmother (Alvina) and Grandpa [Christian Sr] Brege, unable to cope, the Christian Brege children and the the Carl Zinke children got together and made some kind of deal to tend them with Uncle Charley and Mary Zinke in Moltke. Alvina also had bad arthritis and then crutches became the norm until she was unable to walk in the last years of her life in Moltke."Both Christian and Alvine died in Moltke - Grandpa Brege was buried in Belknap and Grandma Alvina Brege was buried in Moltke. Alvina Hoeft was married for over 25 years to Carl Zinke and over 25 years to Christian Brege Sr."
"After Christian's first wife died, this left him with a large family of 7 boys and 1 girl. He was in dire need of a wife. His daughter, Johanna was only 9 years old and not ready for responsibility in running the house. So one day Christian hooked his trusty steed to the buggy and off to the Zinke Hill in Moltke to converse with the widow, Alvina [Hoeft] Zinke, who also had lost here husband. This meeting resulted in Christian Brege making a marriage proposal. Alvine accepted. They married and lived on the farm he owned in Belknap. The farm borders on the west against the east of the Knopf farm. My dad and your dad (Don), Henry Knopf, became close friends when he moved to Belknap. The story is that my dad [Herman Zinke], your dad [Henry Knopf], and my Uncle John Brege got together in the evenings and played many game of spitzer. My mother, Bertha Hardies, did a lot of baby-sitting at the John Brege's. This means my Mother would sit in, and be a fourth person for playing spitzer. These card playing sessions eventually led my Mom and Dad in marriage at the altar at St. Michael's Church in Belknap on 24 September 1927."
"My Dad was 12 or 13 years old at the time he moved to Belknap. He grew up like a brother to all six of the Brege boys and one girl on what we referred to as Brege Road. Our family was always included in any of the Brege affairs. I knew all of them well because I spent summers on the Hardies and John Brege farms as a teenager - mostly at the Brege farm. I knew all about the Trout Creek that begins from a spring on Hardies farm, and meandering to the next farms of Henry Knopf, Christian Brege and John Brege. and finally running into Trout River that flows through Rogers City,"
"From Moltke, Alvina brought her son, Herman Zinke, who later married Bertha Hardies of Belknap; and daughter, Lenora Zinke, who later married Charles Schram of Belknap. Therefore, Herman Zinke and Lenore Zinke grew up in Belknap. It is also the reason that the children of Herman Zinke and the Schrams knew Alvine [Hoeft Zinke] Brege as Gradnma Brege. Alvine's 16 year old daughter, Emma, may have gone to Cheboygan to be with her older sister, Alvine [Hoeft] Jana."

BROWN, Friedrich ‘Fred’ 15 Feb 1853 – 8 Dec 1927
BROWN, Caroline ‘Lena’ [Schmidt] 22 Dec 1858 – 24 June 1948
[Caroline is buried in Forest Lawn Cemetery – Saginaw, MI. On the tombstone of her husband, Fred, in the St. Michael's Cemetery is engraved December 22, 1858 - _____ [no death date]. When it was engraved, it was probably thought Caroline's burial would be in St. Michael's.]
The cemetery record states Friedrich died of chronic gastritis as recorded by the Dr. Wm Arscott.
Last name is also shown as Brauhn in the St. Michael’s church records, but on the tombstone is written Friedrich Brown. His father, and siblings used Bruhn.
Friedrich came to America with his parents and siblings in 1881. All settled and remained in Detroit except Friedrich who homesteaded in Belknap Township..
The Mecklenburg census of 1867 shows the family [Parents: Friedrich & Maria nee Konow Bruhn and children: Friedrich, Carl, Johann, Wilhelm, & Fredericke] living in Breesen, Ritteramt Stavenhagen, Mecklenburg-Schwerin.
Caroline was a midwife. She helped many Belknap mother's deliver children - many times without a doctor present.
The 1900 Michigan, Presque Isle County, Belknap Township Federal Census [E.D. 147 - page 1A] enumerated 1 June 1900 by Walley H. Hein shows:
BROWN, Fred, head, 47, born Feb 1853 Germany, married 22 years, to America in 1887, naturalized, farmer
BROWN, Lena, wife, 41, born Dec 1858 Germany, to America in 1879, married 22 years, 5 children born with 4 living
BROWN, Emil, son, 15, born Dec 1884 Michigan, farm laborer
BROWN, Clara, daughter, 8, born Jan 1892 Michigan, at school
BROWN, Hattie, daughter, 5, born Oct 1894 Michigan, at school
[There has to be a mistake in the date of Fred's entry to America. Since they were married 22 years in 1900, and Emil was born in Michigan in 1884, would indicate that Lena's entry to America in 1879 is probably incorrect.

DETTLOFF, Charles ‘Carl’ Adolph, Sr. 17 Nov 1834 – 11 Sep 1915
[Charles is buried in Faith Lutheran Cemetery – Hawks, MI.]
The name in Pommern was Dettlaf. The name was originally recorded in America as Dethloff. The St. Michael's records show that Charles was born in Chinnow, Kreis Lauenburg, Pommern.
Carl Dettloff bought land in Hawks (known as LaRocque then) in November 1878 from the State of Michigan. A record of a land patent from the Detroit land office shows Charles purchased 80 acres in Belknap on 27 September 1889.
He built the LaRocque Store. In 1907, Carl retired and turned the property over to his daughter, Emma Detloff Elowsky, and her husband August, Jr. providing them with a lifetime lease on the land. Also in 1907, 250 feet of railroad right of way was sold to the Detroit and Machinaw Railroad - 150 feet was located on the north side of the tracks and 100 feet of it ran down along the south side of the tracks.
Cream was brought in by farmers in the area in five-gallon metal cream cans. It would be tested and the farmer was paid according to the butterfat content. The cans of cream were carried over to the depot for shipment to creameris in Alpena and Bay City. The store also became the collection point for eggs to be shipped south on the train from the farms in Bismarck and Belknap Townships.
Henriette died in childbirth [miscarriage]. Her funeral was conducted by St. Michael's laymen in the absence of Pastor Antonius Bohn.
Children of Charles & Henrietta are:
